Traffic Warrants in Albemarle County
Adult traffic cases go to Albemarle General District Court. ACPD's FAQ says a person with a traffic ticket must prepay through the court route or attend the scheduled GDC date; the police department does not accept payment or void the ticket.
Virginia Code section 46.2-938 allows a court-ordered warrant after failure to comply with a traffic summons or notice. The court process and any DMV consequence are related but separate steps.
Albemarle Traffic Cases Start at GDC
Virginia law says a traffic warrant is returned to the court with jurisdiction. The warrant should be accompanied by an officer report identifying the person, code or ordinance, location, vehicle, and license details. When a warrant is returned “not found,” or a person misses the return date, the court may send a certificate to DMV.
The Albemarle GDC page is the local court contact. The statewide statute explains the warrant and compliance sequence.

Call the clerk to confirm the case before making a trip.
How to Check for a Traffic Warrant
OCIS is the public case-information lead, not a citation-only warrant lookup. Choose a name, case number, or hearing date search, select Albemarle General District Court, and review the case events. No public citation-number-specific warrant form was verified.
If the screen does not settle the question, call the GDC Clerk at 434-972-4004. For an agency-origin or service question, the Sheriff is 434-972-4001 and ACPD non-emergency is 434-977-9041. A magistrate handles initial complaint and bail questions.
- Search OCIS by name, case number, or hearing date.
- Select Albemarle General District Court and compare the docket to the ticket.
- Call the clerk if the case or FTA event is unclear.
- Ask which court action satisfies both the citation and any missed-date process.
Albemarle Traffic Search Has No Citation Field
OCIS search help lists name, case number, hearing date, court level, and selected court. Hearing time, hearing type, courtroom, complainant, or unit fields may narrow supported searches. The reviewed local sources did not verify a citation-number-only form, warrant-status filter, or online ticket payment vendor.
When the citation number is missing, try the name on the paper and the likely hearing date, then ask GDC staff for the case number.
The official GDC case-information page shows the court search interface.
Do not invent a portal field that the court does not publish.
Albemarle Traffic Records Use FOIA as a Fallback
If a public document is not visible online, ask the likely custodian for an existing record with a clear description. County FOIA requests receive a response within five working days, with a possible seven-day extension where allowed. Costs may reflect actual search and copy work.
For a court order or docket, contact the clerk first. For an agency service return, the Sheriff or police may hold a separate record. A request cannot make an office create a new warrant database.
What a Traffic Warrant Shows
A court result may identify the case and charge, but OCIS does not promise a separate warrant status. Virginia's traffic process requires the warrant paperwork to identify the person, violation, location, and vehicle details. Ask the clerk how the event is entered in the local docket.
| Case example | GT12345678-90 is a state OCIS example, not an Albemarle citation number. |
|---|---|
| Charge | Traffic offense and Code section where shown. |
| Hearing | Scheduled date and event history in the court case. |
| Process | Ask whether the docket reflects FTA, capias, warrant, or return-not-found. |
| Amount | Case-specific; no local fixed amount was published. |
| Compliance | Confirm court action and any later DMV report with GDC. |
Albemarle Traffic Docket Times Are Court-Specific
The current GDC page lists traffic settings on Monday and Friday at 9:30 and 10:30, and Tuesday at 1:00 and 2:30, with separate OAR and VASAP settings. The schedule can change, so check the live court page before planning around a date.
A first traffic continuance may be handled by deputy clerks; later continuances use a judge or clerk process. A missed date is not erased by waiting for the next traffic docket.
Paying or Lifting a Traffic Warrant
Ask the GDC clerk whether the court permits payment, a new date, a motion, personal appearance, attorney appearance, or bond. Check whether payment addresses the original fine only or also resolves the FTA process. The court's order controls; ACPD cannot clear a traffic case.
- Find the GDC case number and confirm whether a capias or warrant is recorded.
- Ask what the court permits now and whether a separate motion or appearance is needed.
- If the court sets bond, ask the magistrate or jail for current payment instructions.
- Keep the order or receipt and ask when court compliance will be reported to DMV.
Warning: No local online bond portal, fixed motion fee, or universal payment counter was found. Confirm the current instruction with GDC.
Albemarle Traffic Compliance Can Reach DMV Later
Section 46.2-938 ties a traffic FTA process to a court certificate sent to DMV. A license suspension continues until the court reports compliance. This is a legal consequence of the court case, not the source to use for warrant confirmation.
Ask GDC what docket entry or receipt shows compliance and when the court will report it. No Albemarle source promises same-day updates or gives a current local DMV fee amount.
Traffic Warrant vs FTA and License Holds
A warrant authorizes process in the court case. An FTA is a missed required appearance. A DMV suspension can follow the statutory report, but it is not the same record as a warrant. One traffic matter may involve more than one step.
| Mechanism | What Triggers It | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic warrant | Failure to comply with a summons | Returned to the court with jurisdiction |
| Failure to appear | Missed court setting or return date | May lead to further court process |
| DMV suspension | Court certificate under section 46.2-938 | Continues until the court reports compliance |
